Description

Nowadays, English has become a popular language worldwide. However, it is not easy to master all four skills, especially writing skills. Writing demands various skills, which are constructed from many levels, such as sentence level, paragraph level, essay level, etc. In fact, learners face many challenges during the process of learning writing skills. Therefore, to help students overcome those difficulties in learning to write, various technological inventions have been made, such as Google Translate, QuillBot, etc. Among them, ChatGPT has been one of the latest inventions. The study's goal is to investigate how ChatGPT is used as well as its effectiveness in helping students develop their writing abilities and demonstrate the strengths and limitations of that application. To reach the aim, the researcher employed 130 English major sophomore students at the fast-track division. Data were collected from a questionnaire to seek answers to three research questions. The results indicated that various writing steps have been employed, some of which, such as organizing ideas into mind maps, writing complete essays, and revising grammar errors, were frequently supported by ChatGPT. In terms of students’ opinions about the effectiveness of ChatGPT in those steps, its application in organizing ideas into mind maps, creating paragraphs, and revising errors in grammar is the most helpful. Furthermore, the research also demonstrated the strengths and limitations of the ChatGPT application so that students can make use of it appropriately to improve their writing skills.
