Description
The study aimed to explore English-majored sophomores’ perception and reflection on their choice of AI use, adapting Self-Determination Theory (SDT). 80 students in English Faculty were involved in the study in the second semester at Ho Chi Minh University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology, who utilized a number of AI applications and websites such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity AI, NotebookLM, Gamma and so on. A quantitative design was adopted, using a questionnaire based on subcategories in Self-Determination Theory (Ryan &Deci, 2020) to examine the correlation between AI adoption and intrinsic motivation factors. The results showed mixed motivation, which reveals that reasons for learners to use AI are not purely intrincsic or extrincsic. Noticeably, learners mainly used AI due to external factors such as grades, task completion rather than internalized stimuli. More reseach should delve into useful guidelines for integrating AI while learning yet boosting learners’ consciousness of its benefits.
