Description
The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction offers promising methods for vocabulary acquisition, yet its practical implementation faces notable challenges. This quantitative study investigates the perceptions, benefits, challenges, and practical strategies of AI-assisted vocabulary learning among Vietnamese EFL students. Data were collected via a questionnaire conducted by 37 junior English-major students in Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology (HUFLIT). The findings reveal strong student support for AI tools, with participants highlighting significant benefits such as personalized pacing, increased engagement, and improved vocabulary. However, the study also identifies critical barriers to widespread implementation, primarily a lack of formal AI training for educators and the high costs associated with program development. Furthermore, the research outlines highly rated, student-endorsed strategies for using AI, such as prompting chatbots for contextual sentence examples and generating customized vocabulary assessments. Ultimately, this study contributes to the growing body of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) research by providing insights for EFL educators seeking to navigate the AI transition effectively.
