Description

Generative AI tools are becoming common in language education. However, the use of ChatGPT in writing classes is still unclear. This paper proposes a way to use ChatGPT to support self-regulated learning (SRL) in EFL writing. The study focuses on the performance phase. This phase includes drafting and monitoring during writing. The paper presents classroom activities. Learners use ChatGPT while they write. They ask questions, check ideas, and monitor their language. Examples show that ChatGPT helps improve clarity, coherence and language use during writing. The paper also points out some challenges. Learners may rely on ready-made suggestions. They may also lack monitoring during writing. The proposed activities help learners use ChatGPT more actively. The findings show that the tool supports drafting and monitoring when it is used properly.
