Description
As Vietnam moves toward an English as a Second Language (ESL)-oriented system, vocabulary development plays a crucial role in enabling learners to participate in meaningful communication. However, in many public secondary school contexts, teachers face significant constraints, including large class sizes, limited teaching materials, and restricted access to digital technologies.
These challenges often result in vocabulary instruction that is heavily reliant on rote memorization and translation, which may not effectively support long-term retention or communicative use. Despite these limitations, research in Applied Linguistics suggests that vocabulary learning can be significantly enhanced through multimodal input, meaningful repetition, and contextualized practice.
Drawing on principles from Dual Coding Theory and Multimedia Learning Theory, this workshop demonstrates how teachers can design engaging, effective vocabulary activities using low-cost or no-cost resources available in typical classroom settings.
This workshop aims to empower teachers with practical strategies that are adaptable, scalable, and sensitive to the realities of public school environments in Vietnam.
