Description

Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) is rapidly integrated into higher education, which has profoundly altered the landscape of teaching and student learning in higher education. Although AI-powered assisting tools provide not only opportunities but also create challenges for both students and professors, such as plagiarism and breach of integrity, integration of these tools into doctoral courses, specifically Doctoral Research and Writing course, assists learners in enhancing their writing proficiency and cultivating or improving their research skills. This systematic review examines the benefits of integrating Gemini and NotebookLM into doctoral courses to enhance student learning outcomes, improve quality and expand range of educational materials, and create positive academic learning environment. While there is a wealth of research on the use of AI tools and software in higher education, gaps still exist because these tools evolve so rapidly and researchers focus mostly on general-purpose tools like ChatGPT, leaving gaps in research for these specialized Google tools like Gemini and NotebookLM. The purpose of this study is to narrow gaps in existing literature, strengthen professors’ and learners’ AI literacy skills, and promote ethical use of Gemini and NotebookLM in doctoral programs.
