Description
This study is devoted to local history and cultural material as a means of developing a multicultural personality in foreign language classroom. The integration of such material into the subject area of “Foreign (English) Language” motivates learners to acquire English as a tool for self-expression in the multicultural world and fosters their readiness for effective intercultural communication. Understanding the cultural realities of one’s own country allows learners to convey their meaning more accurately in a foreign language and to better comprehend foreign-language texts.
English language learning that connected with personal experience, history, and culture becomes more meaningful and serves as a foundation for successful intercultural interaction. Awareness of native culture’s value builds confidence in intercultural communication and contributes to the preservation of one’s national identity. The study presents a positive experience in developing and piloting English language teaching content based on local history and cultural material of the Republic of Tatarstan. It also describes the teaching strategies used in English classes based on local history, culture, and traditions.
